Mane Juice- An After Sun Essential
Mane Juice is the gift that just keeps on giving. It’s no lie that everyone loves their dose of sunshine and Vitamin D. But why is Mane Juice an essential for after sun care? Let’s break it down.
What happens to my hair and skin after being in the sun?
Don’t get us wrong- we love a day spent enjoying the sunshine as much as the next Wild one. Sun exposure is not only therapeutic but also a source of Vitamin D, a vitamin essential for health. While there are positives, there are also risks involved with overexposure without protection.
For your skin
UV rays react with a chemical in the skin called melanin. This is the first defense against the sun, but melanin can’t absorb all the UV rays. The short-term effects of skin damage are sunburns. More long-term damage on your skin due to UV rays can include premature aging, skin cancer and even vision problems.
For your hair
If your hair has prolonged exposure to the sun, UVA and UVB rays can damage the outside cover of the hair strand, called the cuticle. It can also interfere with the production of a protein known as keratin that makes your hair grow longer and stronger. Signs of sun damage to your hair can include discoloration, dry and brittle strands, broken/ split ends and thinning.
How do the ingredients in Mane Juice help to naturally protect and heal your skin and hair?
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties which makes it a must to prevent sun damage and treat after sun exposure! The good saturated fats help to seal in moisture, which nourishes skin and hair from the outside in helping to treat peeling, dry skin and renew skin and hair cells naturally.
Lavender Oil
Lavender is rightly famous for its fragrance and beauty but it’s formidable healing properties are the star of the show during sunburn season. While sunscreen is the best defense, sometimes we don’t apply as much as we should as often as we should. If you end up with a mild sunburn, lavender can come to the rescue to relieve discomfort and speed healing with its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
Vitamin E Oil
While some research actually suggests that Vitamin E can prevent or reduce the formation of sunburns, what we do know for sure is that Vitamin E contains natural antioxidants that help the skin heal, potentially minimizing the amount of flaking that will ensue.
Rose Hip Oil
Rose Hip oil can also be used to help sooth damage caused by the sun and UV rays. The oil slows down the skin-damaging enzymes which breakdown collagen in the skin which in turn reduces the damage by the sun.
For best results on affected skin
Have a cool shower or apply a cold compress to skin before applying Mane Juice. Do not completely dry the area prior to application as Mane Juice will help to seal in moisture so it can better be reabsorbed.
For best results on affected hair
Apply Mane Juice liberally to the entire scalp and hair from root to tip, focusing on dryer areas. Put up in a messy bun to keep things tidy and leave in for 2-3 hours or overnight. Then wash out thoroughly using your regular shampoo.
A word of caution
While applying Mane Juice to skin immediately following sun exposure has many benefits, it is important to WAIT until the skin stops radiating heat from the area BEFORE applying the oil. Oil can actually trap heat over the affected area and may even delay healing.
